CHU Teh-Chun and the art of calligraphy

April 2023

Although he has produced some magnificent calligraphic works, CHU Teh-Chun was not at all interested in the calligraphy he was first taught as a child, the one in the regular script of the ancient masters of the Tang Dynasty, known as “kaishu”.

But while exploring the family library he discovered a copy of a work by Wang Xizhi (303-361), certainly the most famous calligrapher in Chinese history, and was immediately attracted by his calligraphy in cursive script.

It was through this encounter with the more fluid and freer “caoshu” that his interest in the art of calligraphy was born.
