Key figures from the retrospective Chu Teh-Chun exhibition – In Nebula – at the Fondazione Cini in Venice – April 20th to June 30th 2024

The exhibition walked visitors through a series of emblematic paintings produced from 1955 onwards, the year in which Chu settled permanently in Paris, close to the Western avant-garde. 

✨ On display there were almost 50 major works on canvas, produced between 1951 and 2004, from private and public collections.

✨ A third of these paintings had never been exhibited before. 

✨ None had been exhibited in the last 10 years (with the exception of the one at the Musée d’art moderne de Paris ‘Composition N°228’ – 1966. 

✨ The exhibition featured a seascape entitled ‘On the banks of the Jialing’ dating from 1951, a rare example of the artist’s work before his arrival in Paris. 

✨Two paintings from 1956, ‘Sans Titre’ and ‘Vue lointaine d’une ville’, were produced in his first Paris studio on rue Lhomond, a tiny room that served as both his home and workplace, and in which he lived for two years. 

✨ Exhibition of a very large painting from the ‘Neige’ series: ‘Profusion hivernale’ – diptych – 200 x 500 cm – 1988.

Chu Teh-Chun. In Nebula it’s also :

✨ A record time of just 10 months to complete the retrospective exhibition at the Fondazione Cini and to publish a new monograph devoted to Chu published by Gallimard. 


✨ More than 20 companies involved in bringing these two projects to fruition.


✨ More than 100 people who worked on the exhibition and the new monograph.


✨ 6 weeks of work to achieve the scenography at the Fondazione Cini.


✨ Over 400 m2 of partition walling for the scenography.


✨ More than 40 spotlights installed on tracks built for the exhibition.

✨ All the building materials and the paintings had to be delivered to the island by boat.
